DRIVETRAIN |
| Some uninteresting details........ The engine is completely stock. Amazingly enough, is quite strong so as soon as the basic maintenance of the car is finished, engine mods will begin. The tranny seems to be very tight (Tighter than my 4K in my 82' Scirocco) so it appears that both the engine and tranny have had some major work done to them within the last couple years. (A total guess on my part?) Factory color is white. I couldnt read the paint code but when the repaint happens, ill probably paint it Alpine White. Maybe put some black racing stripes on it too. HA!
Here is what needs to be fixed: Here is what has been done so far: Replaced the shocks/springs, Drivers door latch box, Rear hatch shocks, Rear tail lights, Momo steering wheel, drivers side seatbelt fastner. 7-30-00: Eurosport 2" Exhaust system, Europsort upper/lower/rear stress bars. New lower control arms with all new bushings and ball joints. Valves adjusted. 8-5-00: white 16V bumpers & trim pieces installed. Eurosport Upper and lower stress bars installed. 9-4-00: Replaced steering colum upper and lower bearings. new ignition tumbler/key. Car rekeyed to the new key. Eurosport short shift kit installed. The new Fuba still sits here on my desk. Another day. 10-13-00: Car passed smog today! I took the car to a smog shop close to me to see if it would pass smog. he did a pre test and said it would and he proceeded to input all the data into the computer. DMV flagged the car since it hadnt been registered since 97! DOH! I guess the 2000 sticker on the plate was a little wrong? I had to take it to a smog only station. Not a big deal since I have know of a shop that does good work and isnt afraid to use common sense. It passed and even got registered in the same day. It cost me $72 to pay all the fines and I also got personalized plates that will say "JULZROC". It was a good day. 10-18-00: The damn idle screw keeps screwing itself in! GRRR!! The car keeps dying and I keep re-adjust the screw and it turns itself in. Thats really irritating. Good thing we got those little o-rings at work. 10-21-00: The SP8000's showed up and they were mounted on the Audi wheels that Doug gave me. Man those wheels look so SWEET on the car! (Pics to come!) I also had the car aligned to -1.5 Camber and 0.0 toe. 11-15-00: OK, im not sure on the exact date but I picked up a complete Black interior from "New Dimensions" from an 97 Scirocco 16V. When I got home I swapped in the headlight switch and now I have dash lights! It turns out that the origional switch had fried itself and would only give a hint of light. 12-17-00: today the black interior instalation finally began. I was waiting for a complete power window system to get here before I tore up the interior. (Thanks Mike V!) Black Carpet, Power Windows and it's wiring, new spedo cable, black door panels, side-rear panles were installed! 12-18-00: Personalized plates came in today. "JULZROC" looks good! I decided that its a good time to install a new set of wiper blades too. All 3 were completely shot. See pics above. 12-19-00: The dash was installed today along with the center console and seats. I even replaced a few dash lights so now everything works like it should. 12-21-00: A little birdie ripped the exhaust off the car a couple weeks ago. I installed a new over-the-axle-pipe and I also installed a special cat I made. the rest of the black interior pieces were installed to complete the change to the black interior instalation. 12-22-00: I finally got the sunroof working properly. What a pain in my ass! The Fuba thats been sitting on my desk has finally been installed. 12-23-00: The sunroof has been repaired and is now working properly. Its missing headliner cover has been installed. 12-24-00: A single 300W amp driving 2 X 10" subs in the custom made rear box with a Kenwood flip face CD head unit and the stock sized 4X6e speakers. Finally.... MUSIK!! 1-10-01: After a few weeks of daily driving the thing starts to overheat. Looks like the entire cooling system (Minus all the new hoses ive already replaced.) is junk. I blew a hose after I installed the 160F thermostat today. Pisses me off. I also adjusted the shifter. Now 2nd gear isnt in the back seat anymore! 2-4-01: I replaced the radiator with the hopes that the cooling problem will be resolved. it definately helped but im still having a problem with the reservoir leaking. I replaced the radiator cap and it helped but there is still a hint of coolant loss after I shut it down. It runs temps within spec's but id like to see it run cooler. Ill replace the reservoir next. 2-24-01: I installed the dual outlet manifold (new studs) and Europsort downpipe, polished intake manifold and larger throttle body, windshield washer pump, all new motor mounts and a custom made spacer for the front mount. I also replaced the valve cover gasket with a rubberized unit and new studs. The car is making so much more power that now the clutch is slipping. In the next issue, motor, headwork, clutch.LOL! 3-04-01: I bought a ported solid lifter 8v head from a friend. Its in good shape and although I will do a little more port work to free up a few more ponies, its still what I was looking for. I also picked up a 1.8L 16v short block for the engine build. More to come. 3-12-01: Today was different. I installed an old school suspension Techniques rear swaybar. At least, thats what I think it is. For the hell of it I dropped in an Autotech exhaust tip. Its black, about 3" but looks good in my book. Mostly it extends the exhaust tip out enough to get the exhaust from staining the bumper. I swapped in a set of rear poly shock mounts and hung a Momo shift knob on the shifter. 4-4-01: The motor build continues. The crankshaft that was in the 16V block is junk. Hopefully Potterman will source me a usable crank. We even discussed getting a 2.0L stroker kit since I need a crank. I just cant afford it or I would do it. The block is bored to the NEW 10-1CR 81.5mm pistons. The rods have been ballanced and new bushings installed. The head work is completed and its out getting polished. Once it comes back ill reassemble it. Should'nt be long until I have the new motor done and installed. 5-2-01: To date a few things have happened. The head was polished all nice and shinny (see pic). The short block was bored for the new pistons, cleaned, rods resized. I installed the valves into the head last saturday so its pretty much ready to go. I still have to do alot of polishing for it to look the way I want it to look before the ND show. Thats life eh! 5-15-01: I got he motor built and installed. I did have some running issues that didnt get sorted before the ND show so the car sat home and we only took the 82. Ah well, the motor looks pretty. There's always next year.
8-27-01: Yesterday was Dubwar. (www.dubwar.net) The 84 ran great all weekend. Good enough to win the Scirocco class in the show (Why? I dunno, the motor looks pretty? body is not a show car. Im not complaining.) AND was fast enough to take 2nd place in the Expert class road racing. It also help me to get the "Best Of Race" trophy as well. For its first time out on the track, it performed better than I had expected. It was hot too, 103F in the shade. It was a good weekend for me. I had tow vehicle troubles that were fixed with a new fuel pump and I didnt break any of my other cars. I did Tow Potterman home tho.
10-8-01: This weekend we had a driving school at Pahrumph Nevada. We towed out the 84 Scirocco to see how it liked Hoosiers and to have fun. It was fast enough to fend off some 2.0L 16v's! Its got some decent power for what it is. Dyno day is comming up soon, I hope. Id like to know what its got. Before then, ill put it on the smog dyno to set the fuel correctly.
12-26-01: Well, Santa brought a set of driving lights for the Roc. (I didnt request them.) So after I pull the tranny to figure out whats wrong there, ill install the lights.
2-20-02: Selling and buying a house tends to take alot out my time. I just got the tranny pulled and found that one of the springs on the pressure plate was broken. I got a replacement and also got the 4K ready to go in with the stage 2 diff kit. I also installed a new steering rack with new tie rods as well as Polly bushings. Its alot easier to install with the tranny out.
